San Diego Throwers Announce Throws Meets

UCSD, La Jolla, Calif. - (November 25, 2002) - A San Diego USATF club of throwing event specialists has announced a monthly series of throws meets to commence in December.

Meets are scheduled December 14, January 25 and February 22, and will be held at the throwing facility west of the track at UCSD, La Jolla. Each meet will consist of four events: hammer throw, weight throw, superweight throw, and discus throw.

The meets will start at 10:00 a.m., and are open to all ages and abilities. Registration is $10 for the first event, $5 for the second, and $3 for each additional event.

The series is being presented by Team Thor, founded by Scott Sargeant and Gary Jones. Sargeant is the UCSD recordholder for the hammer throw (65.25 meters, 214'-1", 1992), and the NCAA Division III all-time and championship meet recordholder (64.48 meters, 211'-6", 1992). Track and Field News awarded him top ten rankings in 1994, 1995, and 1998. His lifetime best of 67.28 meters (220'-9") was set in 1995.

Other members of Team Thor are

Brooks Johnson, USATF High performance chairman and coach at the Arco Olympic Training Center has expressed a desire to have his athletes participate in the throws meets.
